Wet Belts
Wet belt systems (also known as timing belts in oil or oil-bathed timing belts) are increasingly common in modern engines. Unlike traditional dry timing belts, these run inside the engine and are lubricated by engine oil. This design offers quieter operation and extended service life, but requires specialist knowledge and equipment for inspection and replacement. However, oil contamination leads to the wet belt material breaking down, releasing particles into the oil. This debris can cause the oil strainer to get blocked resulting in severe engine failure through oil starvation.
What is a Wet Belt?
A wet belt is a timing belt that operates inside the engine, bathed in engine oil. This modern design is used by manufacturers including Ford, Volkswagen, Audi, and PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall).
- Runs inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil
- Quieter operation than traditional dry timing belts
- Allowing for more compact engine designs
